How to motivate yourself to work out

Fitness Motivation

If anyone had told me 4 years ago that now I would work out at least 3 times a week, I would have told them they were crazy. Me? Never! I remember when I first signed up for a gym 4 years ago, I was so motivated that I even went twice to the gym for the whole year :D. However for like a year now I’ve been going to the gym 3 times a week, and if I have to skip it for some reason, then I work out at home. How I managed to get and, more importantly, stay motivated I am going to tell you in this blog post, so keep reading :).

1. Set a Goal

This is probably the most important thing for me, not only when it comes to working out, but generally in life. If I don’t have a certain goal and don’t know what I’m working towards, I know I would procrastinate everything. However, this goal must be exactly defined and not like: “Some day I want to have a six pack”. When is this “one day”? You really have to set a certain point in time until when you want to reach your goal. For example, a couple of months ago I arranged the shooting for this blog post. I knew when it was going when it was taking place and I knew that until then I had to get my stomach in shape. Since I didn’t have much time, I was doing 400 ab exercises every day and I was really consequent because I knew I had to be in shape for this shooting; And I think it worked :). What do you think?

2. Work Out with Friends

Imagine the following situation: You intend to go to the gym later today. Suddenly the phone rings. It’s a good friend of yours who asks you if you wanted to grab a coffee later on because you haven’t seen each other for quite a long time. What are you going to do? Are you going to say: “No, I really want to go to the gym.” or will you rather say: “Hell yeah, let’s do it!”? Let me guess… It’s going to be the second answer. Right?

Well, imagine now the same situation, only with the difference that you have already arranged with another friend to go to the gym together. Will you now cancel the workout in order to go grab a coffee with another friend? Probably not, because it wouldn’t be fair to let your workout buddy down. That’s why I love working out with friends, because you probably won’t cancel the workout.

Another thing – it’s much more fun to work out with other people than alone :).

3. Keep Track of Your Progress

Progress is THE thing that keeps me going. I remember as I first started, I could do like 20 jumping squats at a stroke and now I can do more than 100. I could do 25 crunches at a max and now I’m doing 400. I could leg press 35kg and now I can do 100kg. Now, it’s important to keep track of the progress either by writing it down in a little notebook or by using an app. I for example use the LOOX Fitness Planer and when I take a look at my progress I’m so proud and this keeps me going :).

4. Take Pictures

Another way of keeping track of your progress is by taking pictures. You don’t have to do it every day or after every workout, but once in a while. I do it every 3 months, because if I didn’t see a progress in 3 moths I would know that I’ve done something wrong. It is a great feeling when you take a look at your old pics, compare them with your knew pics and see the difference :).

5. Invest in Workout Clothes

My motivation depends largely on my wellbeing; and my wellbeing depends on the way I’m dressed as well as my overall appearance. I just need to feel comfortable and confident in my clothes – on the street as well as at the gym. I know if I put on some baggy clolthes or something I don’t like, I just wouldn’t feel good and hence wouldn’t b e motivated at the gym. That’s why I like to invest in workout clothes in which I feel good. Especially tights are really important to me. The tights I’m wearing are my absolute favorite ones. They’re compression tights from C3fit, which supress excessive muscle vibration and hence minimize energy loss and enhance efficiency in exercise. What I like the most about them is that they fit like a second skin.

Motivate Myself to Work Out

I would never thought that working out would become such an important part of my life and something that makes me happy. That’s why I also want to share my experiences with you. This is now my first blog post in the category fitness. I really hope you like it and that it will help you get motivated to work out. Make sure to stay tuned because there is so much more to come :).

Now tell me, how do you motivate yourself? Do you use any of the techniques I shared with you or something I didn’t mention?

Work out is really important to stay healthy. But lacking motivation is always a problem 🙂 I go for a run once a week and the only way it keeps me motivated is that I feel really good afterwards. When you keep it on a regular basis it’s easier to stay motivated. xx Simone from Zurich
